DB Box Keeps Tripping in Singapore — Causes and How to Fix It
A distribution board (DB box) that keeps tripping is more than an inconvenience — it is a warning sign. Here is what is causing it and when to call a licensed electrician.
Why Is Your DB Box Tripping?
1. Overloaded Circuit
Most common cause. Too many appliances on one circuit exceed its rated capacity. Solution: redistribute appliances across circuits or add a new dedicated circuit.
2. Short Circuit
A live wire contacts a neutral wire, causing a sudden surge. Look for burn marks, charred outlets, or a burning smell. Requires immediate professional attention.
3. Ground Fault
The RCCB trips when it detects current leaking to earth — often through a faulty appliance or degraded wiring. Unplug appliances one at a time to identify the culprit.
4. Ageing Wiring
Wiring older than 20 years may have degraded insulation. This requires a full electrical inspection.
How to Reset Your DB Box
- Turn off all appliances in the affected area
- Find the tripped MCB or RCCB
- Push it firmly to OFF, then back to ON
- If it trips again immediately — call a licensed electrician
